Conservatory roofs usually consist of a frame into which you can place roof panels. Polycarbonate roof panels are made of a light, strong, thermoplastic material, which is flexible and provides a good substitute for glass. This option is available with all modern conservatories. Polycarbonate is a translucent plastic which is available in many thicknesses (often between 16mm and 35mm), depending on the properties required.
One of the chief advantages of using polycarbonate roofs is that polycarbonate is less expensive than a glass roof. Choosing polycarbonate can save a great deal of money, especially if your conservatory is large. If you are planning to build your conservatory yourself, then another benefit of polycarbonate roof panels is that they are easy to manipulate.
With polycarbonate roofs, you can choose roof panels to match the colour of your conservatory or for their heat reflective properties. For example, most conservatory roofs are available with clear polycarbonate roof panels, or roof panels with a bronze finish (like having sunglasses for your roof). The bronze finish reflects the sunshine, helping to keep the summers cool, but you will also get less light.
If you get double panels of the right thickness, polycarbonate provides great insulation. This will ensure that you, your family and your plants stay warm during the winter. However, their reflective properties will also help keep you cool in the summer. Harmful UV rays will be kept out, while you get the benefit of the sunshine.
